Tulsa Raccoon Control Tip: Why Do Raccoons Tear Up Sod? How to Stop It
Imagine you've got an idea to beautify your home with zero stress. You're going to lay sod along the straight edge of your patio, fence, and driveway. You get it done and go to sleep, feeling a strong sense of accomplishment.

However, you wake up the next day only to find your beautiful new sod all teared up. You get angry, but you fix it. Then you wake up the next day again, and the same thing happens. You're super furious! But who or what is the likely culprit?

While many animals are known to tear up sod, raccoons are notorious for repeatedly opening up new sod. In this post, we explore why they do that and how to stop them.

Why Raccoons Tear Up Sod
Raccoons are omnivores and will pretty much feed on anything. However, raccoons have a predilection for grubs as they provide an easy source of protein for them during the spring.

When you lay out a new sod, you have to water it two to three times daily for the next three weeks. This significantly increases the moisture content underneath the soil. And as you know, moisture attracts worms and grubs.

Raccoons are quite adept at finding grubs, and it doesn't take long before they discover the presence of grubs under the sod. Consequently, the raccoon will roll it over (or even tear it up, if it has to) to gain access to this sumptuous meal. But that's only the start of the problem. Once the raccoon has discovered a new food source, it'll keep coming back day after day, and might even bring some friends along to feast together.

But that's bad news for you because their actions will leave your sod in ruins.

How to Stop It
So how do you stop this from happening? There are five main proven techniques known to keep raccoons away from sod. They include:

  • Installing a Protective Net
Installing a protective net is the most effective way of protecting your sod from raccoons. Cover the sod with a protective net. The mere structure of the net makes it challenging for raccoons to walk on it, let alone dig in. Ensure that you effectively peg down the net with thick plastic or metal as raccoons can try to remove the netting as they are quite dexterous.

Leave the net installed for about three weeks. By this time, the roots should have taken in and the level of watering required would have fallen drastically. You can then take off the net.

  • Light Up Your Lawn
Raccoons are nocturnal creatures. That's why most of the havoc they wreak is carried out at night. A good strategy to keep them off your sod is to install a very bright light close by. A 100-watt bulb should do the trick. You also don't have to keep the bulb on all night. Using motion sensors will only activate the bulb when it detects movement.

  • Motion-activated Sprinkler
A great sprinkler brand is the ScareCrow motion-activated sprinkler. This sprinkler has motion sensors that get activated when it detects motion. When a raccoon or any other animal comes near your sod, the sprinkler automatically delivers a strong water jet in the direction of motion. This scares off the animal. Ensure that the sprinkler is installed such that the jet of water reaches around the edges of the sod for full protection.

  • Repellents
Repellents like ammonia and mothballs can also be used to keep raccoons at bay. Mothballs, in particular, have a very unpleasant smell that makes your lawn unattractive to raccoons. However, note that if there are lots of grubs up for grabs, a raccoon might deal with the unpleasant smell. That's why it's recommended that a repellent is used in conjunction with the methods discussed above.

  • Sprinkle Pure Soap Flakes and Water Thoroughly
Soap flakes will help to reduce the worm population, forcing them to go deeper into this soil. This makes it difficult for raccoons to reach them. Again, this method should only be employed in addition to other methods.
